Comic Book Bears Podcast (comic books)

We are thrilled to welcome writer Jon Westhoff to our little dog and pony show! We discuss his latest book CPS: Child Possession Services for which there is an active Kickstarter campaign in its last few days. If Jon’s is a familiar name to CBB folk, it likely is because of his past as co-publisher at King Bone Press and as one of the heads of the Earth 2 Podcast Network that we were once part of.  Apart from being a writer, a writer, Jon is also a letterer and a lover of Kenny Rogers impersonators. CPS was co-created by Jon’s collaborator of over a decade Bobgar Ornelas. Bob and Jon are teaming up once again to bring CPS’s Connie Dhar - social worker for supernaturally possessed kids - in her first full length story to print! In addition, Jon joins Bryan, Steve and Bill in our regular round-up of our favorite funny books.

The Comic Book Bears are thrilled welcome to the show for the first time David Hazan! David is from Sydney, Australia and is the writer of the upcoming series, Nottingham, from Mad Cave Studios and a winner of the Mad Cave Studios 2019 Talent Search. He has a penchant for queer storytelling and formalism in comics, which shines through in his short comics work, some of which is self-published and some of which is to be published in anthologies from publishers in the coming year. David fills us in on Nottingham, a unique reinterpretation of the Robin Hood mythos, and also discusses some of this other work and comic favorites. Then David joins Bryan, Bill and Steve for a spin of the comic rack. This time around the spotlight shines on Fanny Galactic: Drag Queen Super-Heroine!, Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt (Dynamite), Batman/Catwoman (DC), Colonel Weird: Cosmogog (Dark Horse) and more!

The Comic Book Bears are back with their first post-election episode (recorded 11/12/2020.) This one is admittedly a bit of a hodgepodge. Bryan, Steve and Bill talk about their post-election experiences out of the gate. And the comic book talk is fairly varied. Steve discusses Maids, an new original graphic novel from Fantagraphics by Katie Skelly about the real life Papin Sisters murders.  Bryan gives us an X of Swords update. Bill fills us in on Laurel and Hardy Meet The Three Stooges #1 published by American Mythology. Also - though it might be a bit more effective on video - Bill and Steve unbox their most recent DCBS boxes and talk about their newly received comics. Throughout the rest of the episode you will also hear about the promotion of Marie Javins to Editor in Chief at DC Comics, Cross Over #1 (Image), Origins #1 (Boom!), tv series on NXIVM and Scientology, the awfulness of corporate speak, Bill watching things off of Steve's Plex server, the Woofs of the Week and much more!

This time around CBB boys Steve and Bill are thrilled to welcome to the show writer Stonie Williams! Stonie's new book, Villainous, is published Mad Cave Studios and tells the story of Matilda “Rep-Tilly” Anderson, an intern for the Heroes of the Coalition team of super-heroes. Rep-Tilly, like the rest of her fellow intern class, is paired with a more experienced superhero to hone her crime fighting skills. But the hero she is being mentored by, the strongman Showdown, and the Coalition itself are not exactly what they appear to be to the outside world. We talk to Stonie about his own history with comics, his influences, his epic beard (!) and much more! Following that Stonie joins Bill and Steve for some current comic talk with The Resistance, Hedra, Killadelphia, Thor, Spy Island and more on the spinner rack!
